Places to Visit

 

Lochcarron Weavers

2 miles along the road to North Strome/Ardaneaskan. Tartan is still woven on the old looms and sold in the shop, also sells a wide range of knitwear and tweeds.

Strome Castle

A ruined castle which is situated on a rocky promontory jutting into Loch Carron, commanding fine views westwards to Skye.

3 miles west of Lochcarron at North Strome.

Smithy Heritage Centre  

Located in a restored smithy and forge just past the golf course, about two miles out of Lochcarron on the road to Inverness.

Exhibitions of local history, old photographs and historical booklets about Lochcarron. 

Open from April to October, admission is free but there is a box for voluntary donations.

Attadale Gardens

About 6 miles from Lochcarron on the other side of the Loch on the A890 to Kyle of Lochalsh.

Located in the grounds around Attadale House are various types of garden. 

Traditional kitchen garden, water garden and Japanese garden plus a geodesic dome housing the fern collection. 

The gardens are open 10 am to 5:30 pm April - October, closed Sundays.

Applecross

18 miles west of Lochcarron, via the steep and winding Bealach nam Bà (Pass of the Cattle). 

This is one of the highest roads in Britain at 2,055 ft.

There is a view point at the top with spectacular views of the islands of Raasay and Skye.

Make it a day trip and return to Lochcarron via the costal road round to Shieldaig and then back via the A896.

Eilean Donan Castle

Probably the most photographed castle in Scotland

18 miles south of Lochcarron at Dornie on the A87 about 30 minutes by car.

Isle of Skye

Easily reached via the Skye Bridge (free of charge) from Kyle of Lochalsh.

The bridge is around 23 miles from Lochcarron, again about 30 minutes by car.

 

Walking and Climbing

The Lochcarron area is ideal for walkers and there are a number of walks locally of varying difficulty and distance (from 2 to 18.5 km). 

There is a copy of the "Guide to Local Walks and Visitor Amenities" in the guest information folder in the bedroom for more details. 

There are also numerous peaks nearby in excess of 3000 ft and many more that are over 2000 ft suitable for experienced walkers/climbers with appropriate clothing, equipment and maps.

Rock climbers will be able to access the hills of Torridon (about 45 minutes by car)

The Cullins on Skye or the Five Sisters of Kintail are about an hour and  15 minutes away by car.

 

Golfing

Lochcarron has it own challenging 9 hole golf course where visitors are welcome without booking. 

Daily green fees are payable and club hire is available.

 

Fishing

There is a wide range of loch, river, and sea fishing available in the area. You will find a copy of the local Lochcarron Fishing guide in the guest information folder in the bedroom.

Boat Trips, 

There are a variety of boat trips available nearby.

All very suitable for seeing more of the local wildlife such as seals, seabirds or possibly otters.

Calum's Seal Trips from Plockton

Seaprobe Atlantis (glass-bottomed boat) from Kyle of Lochalsh pier. Booking is advisable during the summer season, call free on 0800 9804846

Skye Car Ferry from Kylerhea on Skye to Glenelg - runs from Easter to October

Enjoy the stunning scenery and visit the Pictish brochs at Glenelg (reputed to be the finest examples on mainland Britain).

Bike and Canoe Hire

The area around Lochcarron is ideal for cyclists and if you haven't brought your own bike they can be hired from Lochcarron Garage. 

They also hire canoes so for a different perspective on Lochcarron - why not paddle around the Loch.
